Madinah as a Hub for Culinary Innovation and Women’s Empowerment International Project

Objectives

In alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 commitment to enhancing women’s roles in society and Madinah’s stated objective of being an Inclusive City, the project aims to provide a platform for Arab women from UCCN and underrepresented social groups. This initiative enables them to showcase their skills and promote their creative initiatives through an annual international culinary competition. The overarching goal is to position Madinah as a hub for innovative culinary ideas, while advancing women’s empowerment, gender equality, sustainable progress, and cultural pride.

Scope and key Action

The project focuses on two main themes:

  • Innovation in Traditional Gastronomy: Encouraging creative reinterpretations of traditional recipes with an emphasis on culinary heritage and local ingredients.
  • Sustainable Gastronomy: Promoting practices that prioritize environmental preservation and sustainable resource use.

Each year, a specific challenge related to gastronomy is selected, such as reducing food waste, integrating innovative technologies into traditional cooking methods, or promoting underutilized local ingredients. Participants are tasked with developing innovative solutions to these challenges, which are evaluated by a panel of experts comprising industry leaders, institutional representatives, and entrepreneurs. The winning idea is then realized through a
collaboration between the food industry and the Culinary Art Commission, with Saudi Culinary Boutiques across the country dedicating specific spaces to showcase the winners’ projects.

Stakeholders

Key stakeholders include Arab women from UCCN networks, underrepresented social groups, food industry, food entrepreneurs, and the Culinary Art Commission, all collaborating to elevate women’s contributions to gastronomy.

Expected Outcomes

  • Create opportunities for Arab women to demonstrate culinary innovation.
  • Increase visibility of women’s leadership in gastronomy.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to implement winning ideas.
  • Promote cultural pride and sustainable gastronomic practices.

Impact

This initiative is a transformative step towards empowering women and advancing gender equality in the Arab world, highlighting their critical role in cultural and economic development. Through the emphasis on collaboration and visibility, the program inspires future generations of women to pursue leadership roles and creative careers, contributing to a more equitable and progressive society. The program sets a global example for sustainable development and inclusivity.
